Shoreline Frost Tonight? Protect Fair Haven Pipes Now

A frost advisory covers the Connecticut shoreline Friday night, so open the sink cabinets on outside walls and wrap any pipe in a cold basement corner before bed.

To keep pipes from freezing on a frosty night, go after the pipes that run along outside walls and through unheated spaces. Open the sink cabinets on exterior walls, keep the thermostat at the same setting all night, and wrap any exposed pipe in a cold basement or porch with foam sleeves. WFSB reported a frost advisory for the Connecticut shoreline on Friday night, October 23, with lows of 30 to 35 near the shore, which makes this weekend the first real cold test for Fair Haven plumbing.

Why Fair Haven Pipes Run Cold

A lot of Fair Haven housing is older wood frame two and three families, with kitchens and baths stacked against outside walls, back porches that got closed in decades ago, and stone or brick foundations with gaps at the top where cold air gets in. Supply lines often run right through those spots.

One frost night rarely freezes a pipe inside a heated house. What it does is show you which corners run cold, and those are the same spots that split in January. Finding them now costs you a flashlight and ten minutes.

Five Spots to Check Before Bed

  • Sink cabinets on outside walls. Open the kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors overnight so warm room air reaches the pipes. Move cleaning products up and out of reach of kids and pets.
  • The top of the basement wall. Put your hand along the pipes where they run near the sill. If you feel a draft, close the basement windows and stuff the gap with foam or an old towel.
  • Closed-in porches and back stairs. Lines feeding a porch sink, a washer or an upstairs unit often pass through spaces with no heat. Slip foam pipe sleeves from the hardware store over anything you can reach.
  • Garages and mudrooms. The Red Cross says to keep garage doors closed when water lines run through the garage. The same goes for an unheated mudroom door.
  • The thermostat. Keep it at the same setting day and night. If you own a rental with an empty unit, leave the heat on at 55 or higher. Our vacant house guide covers the rest.

If a faucet slows to a trickle on a cold morning, leave it open and warm the pipe with a hair dryer or heating pad, starting near the faucet and working back. Keep the cord away from any standing water, and never use a torch or any open flame. While you're at it, find your main shutoff with our shutoff valve guide and drain the hose spigots with our outdoor faucet guide.

Signs You Need a Plumber

  • No water at a faucet and no idea where it froze. The ice is likely inside a wall, and a plumber can find it without guessing.
  • A pipe that looks bulged, frosted or split. Leave it alone and have it replaced before it thaws and lets go.
  • A wet spot or stain on an outside wall. That can mean a crack that opened behind the drywall.
  • Low pressure after a thaw. A small split can bleed water into the wall even after the faucet works again.
  • Water spraying anywhere. Shut off the main right away, kill power anywhere the water is reaching, then call.

This week's move

Before bed Friday, open the sink cabinets on your outside walls, close the basement windows, and feel the pipes near the foundation to find the ones that run cold.

Quick Answers

Can pipes freeze on a night that only gets down to the low 30s?

A single night near freezing rarely freezes a pipe inside a heated house. The pipes at risk are the ones in unheated spaces and along uninsulated outside walls, and that risk climbs fast once nights drop well below freezing several nights in a row.

Should I drip my faucets during a frost?

For one shoreline frost night, open cabinet doors and steady heat usually cover it. Save the drip for hard cold: the American Red Cross recommends letting cold water drip from a faucet served by exposed pipes when the weather is very cold.
