COMMON PROBLEMS
Why Is There No Hot Water in My House
Gas or electric, here's how to narrow down the cause before you call, and when it's time to replace the unit.
Updated September 2026 · New Haven, CT
No hot water anywhere in the house almost always traces back to the water heater itself. What's actually wrong with the unit depends on whether it's gas or electric.
Common Causes
- Pilot light out (gas units). The most common cause on a gas water heater, and often something you can relight yourself following the label on the unit.
- Tripped breaker or failed heating element (electric units). Check the breaker first, if it's fine, the heating element itself has likely failed.
- Sediment buildup insulating the burner or element. Years without a flush lets sediment settle at the bottom of the tank, blocking heat from reaching the water.
- A failed thermostat. The unit runs but never actually heats the water to temperature.
- An undersized tank for household demand. Not a failure exactly, but running out of hot water partway through back-to-back showers looks the same as a broken unit.
Gas vs. Electric Troubleshooting
- Gas: Check the pilot light first, then whether the gas valve is open. A pilot that won't stay lit usually means a failing thermocouple.
- Electric: Check the breaker first, then be aware most electric units have two heating elements, if only one fails you may get some hot water, just not enough.
When to Call a Plumber
- The pilot won't stay lit after relighting it. That usually points to a failing thermocouple or gas control valve, which needs a pro.
- The breaker keeps tripping when reset. That's an electrical fault in the unit. Stop resetting it and call.
If the unit is old enough that repair doesn't make sense anymore, our water heater replacement cost guide breaks down what a new tank or tankless unit runs installed.
Quick Answers
Why do I have hot water in one part of the house but not another?
That points to a specific fixture or a closed valve on that line. A whole-house loss of hot water is almost always the unit, a localized loss usually isn't.
How much does it cost to replace a water heater if this doesn't get fixed?
Tank units typically run $800 to $2,500 installed, tankless runs $1,400 to $3,900. See our full breakdown in the water heater replacement cost guide linked below.
